It’s a seemingly impossible task to capture the essence and unique splendor of Vermont’s ever-changing seasons and landscapes of simple beauty. Yet noted watercolor artist Walton Blodgett somehow managed to do so in his own inimitable style. The Inn is indeed fortunate to house the largest public display of his wonderful paintings which are hung throughout the main part of the hotel for you to view and enjoy at your leisure.
Blodgett, who studied under George Luks in New York, moved to Stowe from Connecticut in 1941. He clearly found the town a source of artistic inspiration as he painted the area’s vistas and homes from his studio, located on Route 100 across from Shaw’s supermarket, which offered a magnificent view of Mount Mansfield. Blodgett’s paintings deftly depict the scenery and backdrop of rural Vermont life during the 1940s and 50s.
Many of Blodgett’s works were collected by a former Inn owner who had a special relationship with the painter, enabling him to exhibit these lovely masterpieces in his hotel and the painter to feed his family. Other Blodgett paintings hang in residences and businesses around the world where they are prized for their wonderful feeling of Vermont. The Inn has a number of quality reporductions, of some of his best works, for sale.
