The Depot Shops
Through the years in the Old Depot
In 1897, the Old Depot was constructed to house
the Mt. Mansfield Electric Railway. The train carried passengers
and freight the eleven miles between Waterbury and Stowe
until 1932. The
two historic main buildings of the Green Mountain Inn (the
Old Depot and the original inn) are connected by a bridge.
In addition to guest rooms, five independently owned “must
visit” shops
comprise the first two levels of the Old Depot, including…
Stowe Mercantile – Stowe’s newest “old general store” and an experience not to be missed, this eclectic shop offers everything from “penny candy” and fudge to Vermont specialty food products (including maple syrup!), Yankee candles, and Stowe clothing to children’s gifts, pewter jewelry and handmade soap. A pot belly stove, a checker board table and “help yourself” wrapping beckon visitors who are looking for a taste of New England during their stay.
Vermont Furniture Works – here you will find exquisitely hand crafted 18th & 19th century furniture reproductions in cherry, tiger maple and other quality hard woods. Many of the hand-crafted four poster beds at the Green Mountain Inn were purchased at Vermont Furniture Works. Irresistible accessories, including turned wood, antique brass and wrought iron lighting fixtures, wood carved decoys, shaker boxes, baskets and prints, are offered. Bear Pond Books – A very popular shop for local and visiting book lovers! You will find an excellent selection of Vermont literature – from novels and visual “coffee table” publications, to travel guides, calendars and locally crafted greeting cards. Selections from the New York Times Best Seller list, magazines, children/young adult books, and a wonderful card and gift-wrap section may keep you browsing for longer than expected!
Jamie's on Main – treat yourself to a delectable bagel, muffin, fresh made soup, sandwich, cupcake or other creation, all the while enjoying the sites to be seen on Main Street from this cozy café. Open from 7:00am through mid-afternoon most times of the year.
