Montpelier (just about a 30 minute drive from Stowe) is the smallest capital city in the country. Its relaxed "small town" feel can be experienced when strolling the historic neighborhoods and downtown area. Unique boutiques, shops, book sellers and eateries are a joy to explore. Outdoor enthusiasts and cyclists will enjoy clothing, accessories and hard goods at the friendly Onion River Sports. Coffee lovers will find a great cappacuino or latte at Common Grounds, or a delicious pastry at Café Brioche–operated by the New England Culinary Institute, which is based in Montpelier (NECI also operates the Main Street Grill & Bar, open for lunch and dinner daily). Movie lovers will enjoy "artsy", more obscure films at the intimate Savoy Theatre, offering air-blown pop corn and herbal teas. In season, Montpelier offers a great Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning. Visit the Vermont Historical Society, offering a book store and pre-contract period to present day artifacts. Tour the Vermont State House, a magnificant building offering free guided tours every 30 minutes from July through mid-October (Monday-Friday from 10:00am-3:00pm and Saturdays from 11:00am-2:30pm).

Just outside of town is the Morse Farm Sugar Works, Vermont’s oldest maple family operation. Learn about our state’s famous product while exploring a traditional sugar house, maple trail and forest of sculptures. Country store, free tasting and world-wide shipping are offered. Open 7 days from 9-5, year-round.

While in the area, check out the Rock of Ages Granite Quarries – the world’s largest dimension quarries. Self-guided tours of this historic inactive quarry are offered May 1 – October 31st, Monday-Saturday from 8:30am-5:00pm and on Sunday from 12noon-5:00pm. Admission is free, and video, exhibits and gifts are available. Exciting narrated tours to the ACTIVE quarry are offered Monday through Friday from June to mid-October from 9:15am to 3:00pm. A small fee applies. Sculpting is also available from Monday – Friday, 8:00am to 3:30pm.
