Winter Is Over But The Snow Must Go On

The length of a ski season varies, but is generally around 5 - 6 months. Ski season length depends on location, altitude, and other factors, such as snowmaking. But who said that just because the winter is over, the winter sports have to end? Most skiing resorts remain open till mid-April. And because of longer hours, and features such as sunny slopes, plus discounted lift passes and accommodation, spring is actually an ideal time to head for the slopes for some skiing and other winter sports.

The extra-season brings a lot of little things that matter a lot. In spring you'll find the slopes less crowded than during the winter months. Also, the snow is now typically soft and sugary, just great for skiing. However, it's not just the quality of the skiing that stays the same. There are other advantages of spring skiing and they are commonly found with the onset of warmer weather. How do restaurants and café terraces opened for BBQs and beer sessions sound? This is where skiers and snowboarders can sit in the sun and soak up some rays whilst enjoying the mountain scenery and chatting.

Not only does spring skiing and snowboarding offer a more relaxed atmosphere on the slopes, but many resorts hold festivals, parties and carnivals. This is to celebrate the end of another winter. These may come in the form of festivals including live music performances and fun events such as a "Slush Cup" (where skiers and snowboarders ski down a hill and then try to make it over a big slushy puddle, often in fancy dress). It's a very fun event for both the participants and the spectators. The winners enjoy the glory and applause from the onlookers, while the losers end up rather wet!

When skiing in spring, whether you have a sensitive skin or not, make sure to bring plenty of high factor sun cream. The intense sunrays and highly reflective surface of the snow can quickly burn your skin. For the same reason, a good pair of sunglasses is essential to protect your eyes. You may find wearing skiing goggles a little hot. In spring it's often possible to ski or snowboard in a t-shirt. However, it is wise to carry extra layers too. You never know when a spring storm deposits a dump of snow, so you might even get lucky with some spring powder!

During spring skiing, every skier needs to take a few extra steps to have a pleasant, safe ski trip. You need to consider the stronger sunshine, changing snow conditions, and warmer temperatures.

You should also take into consideration that in Spring all sport gear prices go down. This is why Spring is also an ideal time to buy new skiing and snowboarding gear. Their prices are typically heavily discounted at the end of the season. The reason behind this is that shops seek to clear their stock and get ready for the summer trade season.

Even though it marks the end of the ski season, spring skiing can be an enjoyable time for all skiers. With less of a crowd and more sunshine, spring is a great time to be on the mountain.

The best places to head for spring skiing are ski resorts situated above 2500m. Ski area with glaciers such as Whistler will stay open even longer, with lifts running until June.
