Skiing Basics

Skiing is a sport or activity in witch the skier uses to skies to glide over snow. It used to be a way to get across the snow. It was a common activity for the people that live in countries that have no other way of transportation trough snow. In the 20th century it started to enter the competitive activities. The Norwegians had the most important role in the development to Skiing as we know it. They have invented the slalom and in the 19th century they have started using bindings for better steering. But the most important revelation was made by a man from Austria, Hanes Schneider; he had the idea of using his body to steer while Skiing.

For most people Skiing is just another mountain activity, but there are a lot of different styles and techniques that average skiers don't know about: alpine, backcountry, ski touring, ski jumping, skijoring and many more. Due to the danger of avalanches, Skiing is usually allowed only in specially designed ski resorts. It is also used by the military. When they need to travel above snow, the best way to do it is with skies. This method was used in a few wars, especially in the northern countries.

There are a variety of conditions that a skier might encounter. Natural snow can come in a lot of forms. But there are artificial ski slopes available for everyone. People can ski at room temperature, so this version of Skiing is very attractive. Most countries have natural ski slopes, so they don't need to invest in artificial slopes. But in countries like the United Kingdom, they are useful and popular. The artificial snow is made out of plastic tiles, but the most common material is dendix, specially created for artificial ski slopes. The slopes that use dendix need to be lubricated with water. The newest material is called Snowflex. It provides grip, impact protection, lubrication and it allows the skier to do everything that he could do on a natural slope.

People than want to start Skiing need some basic training and they need to be in good shape. You can find a trainer on any ski resort and usually at an affordable cost. You can learn the basic styles with ease: telemark and alpine. The difference between these two styles is that telemark skiers don't have their heels strapped to the ski, they have a flexible boot. But alpine skiers have their boots looked to the skis. Telemark Skiing is considered harder than alpine.

Also, skiers have safety equipments: gloves, goggles that protect the skier's eyes from sunlight and snow, ski poles, helmets and much more. The equipment has to protect the skier from cold and potential injuries.

In the last years, Skiing was introduced to people with disabilities. There are a lot of ways to adapt the skies for those with disabilities. They usually practice downhill Skiing as a sport or for recreational purposes. It became popular for people with disabilities when the veterans retuned from World War II. Now the most noticeable events in this area are the Paralympics Winter Games and the Disabled Alpine Skiing World Championships.
